Memphis, TN May 2010 ~ Brad Allen talks about his experience working in a Red Cross shelter in Millington, TN after devastating floods hit Tennessee on May 1. Brad was ready when the time came, helping his neighbors who were hurting from overwhelming losses. He was prepared because of a program his employer, the FedEx Corporation, had partnered with Mid-South Chapter of the American Red Cross to implement.
The program, Ready When the Time Comes, is an American Red Cross disaster preparedness program that recruits volunteer teams from local businesses across the country and trains them to serve as Red Cross emergency response volunteers before disaster strikes. This allows the Red Cross to quickly mobilize, providing relief when it is needed most.
The program was launched by the National American Red Cross and National Founding Sponsor, Grainger in 2006. The FedEx Corporation serves as local program lead for the Mid-South Chapter.
Today, more than 450 companies and organizations in 40 cities have joined Ready When the Time Comes. More than 10,000 employee volunteers have been trained through the program, increasing Red Cross capacity to respond to emergencies by 40%.
Brad feels fortunate to work for the FedEx Corporation. He feels the training he received was invaluable and treasures the wonderful experience of serving his neighbors in their time of need.
